Renovation Work on St Thomas’ Church
The work of rewiring/relighting is almost complete. By the time you read this, work will have begun on the conservatory link from house to church. The Crucifix which sits above the Tabernacle has been sent to Hayes and Finch for restoration and cleaning, the firm by whom the new statues of Our Lady and the Sacred Heart are also being restored, and tasteful plinths for them and St. Anthony are being made. A new polished Processional Cross is on order; and we were recently gifted a new Thurible, incense boat and stand by two very generous parishioners. You will notice that the electric Sanctuary Lamp has been disabled.
The Church prefers that the red light which burns constantly to indicate the presence of the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament in every Catholic Church be a living flame, and so I have relit the most impressive hanging sanctuary lamp which is such a feature of our church The new liturgy in particular resists anything which looks like something but isn't, so an imitation flame in an electric bulb to indicate the real presence is less than adequate. The revised liturgy calls for all our liturgical elements and signs to be authentic expressions.
